Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a circulatory condition in which a patient has narrowing of blood vessels and reduced blood flow to the limbs. PAD can also lead to artherosclerosis which is the hardening of the arteries. Patients with PAD may experience pain of fatigue in their legs during daily activities or at rest, slow or non-healing wounds on the feet, color changes on the skin of the feet and poor nail & hair growth on toes & legs. However, many patients with PAD do not experience symptoms at all.

People who smoke, have diabetes or high cholesterol, are overweight at risk for PAD.

If left untreated, PAD can lead to limp amputations. In order to prevent amputations, our Interventional Radiologists provide different minimally invasive treatment options to open up the narrowed artery & restore blood flow.

Treatments

Angioplasty is a more common treatment option, which you can read more about under angioplasty.

Atherectomy is another option for patients with PAD and this procedure involves guiding a catheter to the site of the occlusion and shaving the plaque from the artery wall and removing it.
